String theory may not be the answer to all questions, and it is certainly not the final revelation of science, but it may the clearest glimpse into underlying structure of the world that science has ever dared to present, and it is a glimpse that blurs the line between science and mysticism.
String theory justifies itself with an elegant set of mathematical equations, but in the end the equations point to a paradox, and in order to get past that paradox scientist should come to terms with the fact that mathematics has its limitations, and at best can only trace out a small fragment of the absolute. As far as I can tell, scientist haven't really come to terms with the paradox, at least mainstream science hasn't, and alas we reinvent the wheel.
When I say that science is still trying to reinvent the wheel I am essentially making the prediction that the beyond the horizon of our most modern science lies a practical application that mystics have been aware of and have engaged for thousands of years.
It's a simple and logical next step, but it flies in the face of the religion of science. We are made out of energy. The universe is made out of energy. Time is flexible. Space is flexible. Put it together and what do you have? In my opinion, right there you are describing the foundations of a universe where anything is possible, not by bending or breaking the laws of physics, but rather by applying the higher physics which supersedes Newtonian limitations.
In order to take it to that next level, in order to apply what quantum physics and string theory tell us is possible, we are going to have to move past the incessant juggling of equations and start exploring the real final frontier: Consciousness.
If this seems like a leap of faith, or a twist of new age philosophy consider this for a moment. According to string theory, at the its root the entire universe is made up of one single kind of energy that manifests in different forms based on the frequency at which it is vibrating. That means us also, and that means consciousness as well. The implication should be obvious. Consciousness is the direct result of a particular vibration of energy.
Now here's where it gets interesting. Consciousness is able to influence the world around it. At the most simple level you are the consciousness that tells your body when to move, and determines the thoughts that you think, but when you bring all of these common associations back to that root idea, the idea that everything is made of the same energy, then the picture changes. What you now have is a world where energy is aware, and it has the ability to influence the fields of energy around it. Mystics have known this for a long time.
Eventually we may find scientist realizing that rather than playing with equations they need to start testing the limitations of awareness. Can you imagine what we could accomplish if we as a culture would put our collective attention on the development of human potential as an integral part of education?
